About the Gallery

The Joyce Gordon Gallery is a commercial fine art gallery located in the downtown district of Oakland California. It exhibits art that reflects the social and cultural diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area and international artists. The aim of the gallery is to respect the creative pursuits of the individual and seek to make such work accessible to a broad audience.

Associate Professor, Photography department, San Francisco Art Institute

Honored Photographer
Imogen Cunningham
American, 1883-1976

Every year the Glimpses in Time exhibition honors a Master Photographer.  This year it is Imogen Cunningham, An American Photographer born in 1883.

Imogen Cunningham was a pioneer of art photography, whose influence continues in the photographic style of the SF Bay Area and art photography today.  She helped art photography free itself of soft-focus pictorialism that was considered high art photography of the day.  With her photographic work, her involvement in major photographic movements, and her work in building institutions, Cunningham helped to further define what art photography is.  She was co-founder of the “Group f/64”, teaching at the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA).  We know this institution today as the San Francisco Art Institute.  Cunningham’s peer relation ship with Edward Weston, Dorthea Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams and Minor White and her great body of art work define her as a master.
